What to put in the summary
State the size of the employee population you support, the range you cover (recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, benefits), and your HRIS. A line on your approach to compliance and fairness is natural here and useful.
HR generalist supporting 220 employees across two states in light manufacturing. Handles hiring, onboarding, leave administration and employee relations, with a focus on documented, consistent decisions. SHRM-CP.
Sample bullets with numbers
Use headcount supported, time-to-fill, turnover and case closure times. HR work is easy to describe in duties; numbers show your results.
- Filled 38 roles in a year with an average time-to-fill of 29 days, down from 41, by shortening the screening step.
- Redesigned onboarding into a first-week checklist; new-hire 90-day turnover fell from 17% to 9%.
- Handled employee-relations cases for 220 staff, documenting each investigation and closing 95% within 30 days.
- Audited personnel files against a state checklist and corrected 41 gaps before an agency review.
- Administered open enrolment for 180 benefit-eligible employees with no coverage errors reported afterwards.
- Introduced a short stay-interview pilot with supervisors that surfaced two scheduling issues the exit surveys had missed.
These numbers are invented to show the shape of a good bullet. Use your own, and leave a number out rather than guess.

Common mistakes
- Using “people person” in place of recruiting or retention numbers.
- Omitting headcount supported, which sets the scale of the job.
- Revealing confidential details of cases. Keep examples general.
- Listing every HR function equally, rather than ordering by what the job post wants.

Human Resources Generalist resume questions
SHRM-CP or PHR?
Either is respected. List the one you hold, with the year. If you do not hold one, your bullets matter more than the letters.
How do I mention sensitive work?
Describe the type and volume without details: “resolved 24 employee-relations cases” is fine; names and specifics are not.
