What to put in the summary
Name the domain you analyse (retention, supply chain, clinical operations), your strongest tools, and the kind of decision your work supports. A summary that ends in a result, such as “my last dashboard replaced eight weekly spreadsheets”, is better than a list of skills.
Data analyst with four years in e-commerce operations. I build the reports teams actually use, in SQL and Tableau, and I check my numbers against a second source before they go in a meeting. Recently replaced eight manual weekly spreadsheets with one dashboard.
Sample bullets with numbers
Start each bullet with the question or decision, then the method, then the effect. “Analysed sales data” could describe any analyst; the decision it changed is yours alone.
- Built a fulfilment dashboard in Tableau on top of a SQL model; warehouse leads now review late-shipment causes daily instead of monthly.
- Found that 22% of refund volume came from two carriers on one lane, which led to a carrier change and a drop of about 9 points in refund rate on that lane.
- Automated the weekly sales report with Python and scheduled queries, saving the finance team around six hours a week.
- Defined the single metric definition for “active customer” with finance and product, ending three competing numbers in board slides.
- Cleaned and joined five source tables for a pricing review covering 14,000 SKUs, with documented assumptions.
- Trained 12 coordinators to write their own basic queries, reducing ad-hoc requests to the analytics inbox.
These numbers are invented to show the shape of a good bullet. Use your own, and leave a number out rather than guess.
Key skills to list
- SQL
- Python (pandas)
- Tableau
- Excel (pivot, Power Query)
- Looker
- A/B test analysis
- Data cleaning
- dbt
- Statistics
- Stakeholder reporting
SQL first, then the visualisation tool the job post names. If you have used a tool lightly, say so instead of inflating it.
Common mistakes
- Listing “data analysis” as a skill. It is the job title; name the methods and tools instead.
- Describing dashboards without saying who uses them or what changed.
- Overclaiming machine learning on an analyst resume when the work was reporting.
- Forgetting to mention the data size or number of stakeholders, which shows scale.

Data Analyst resume questions
Should I put projects on a data analyst resume?
If you have under two years of experience, yes: one or two projects with a clear question, dataset and finding. Link to the notebook or write-up. With more experience, work results take their place.
SQL or Python first in the skills list?
Whichever the job post puts first. For most analyst roles that is SQL, because it is what you will use on day one.
